E-books lunchtime drop-in session on Wednesday 29th January

Want to learn more about how to find and use e-books? Have you got a Kindle, an iPad, a Nook, or a Smart Phone but aren't sure which of the library e-books you can read or download onto it?

An ebooks@cambridge lunchtime drop-in session will be held in the Cybercafe at the Department of Chemistry from 1-2pm on Wednesday 29th January.

Come along to the drop-in session and bring your devices if you have one, Wi-fi will be available, otherwise just bring yourself! All students and staff are welcome to drop by and ask questions.

Cambridge Books Online monographs trial

The ebooks@cambridge team is pleased to announce that Cambridge users now have access to nearly 14,000 new monographs on Cambridge Books Online and CUP's University Press Online ebook platforms.

Very Short Introductions trial

The ebooks@cambridge team have just launched a trial to Very Short Introductions. There are 363 titles in the collection, which will be available until 31st December 2013. They are in subject areas in Arts and Humanities, Law, Medicine and Health, Science and Mathematics and Social Sciences. Titles in the Biological Sciences include: The Animal Kingdom, The Cell, The History of Life and Marine Biology.

Ebrary's 'Academic Complete' trial

There is a trial of Ebrary’s ‘Academic Complete’ ebooks running from now until Wednesday 8^th January 2014.

 

All 87,411 ebook titles are searchable in LibrarySearch (they should be hard to miss!), or you can browse the collection on the ebrary platform from the following link:

http://site.ebrary.com/lib/camuk/

The Academic Complete collection consists of around 90,000 back-list titles published prior to 2012, although Wiley is a major publisher within the collection which offers front-list publications. Other publishers covered include Brill, Cornell University Press, Harvard University Press, John Benjamins, Johns Hopkins University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and Yale University Press.

New e-books purchased by the Zoology Library!

The Balfour Library has purchased two new e-books on using R: 

Mixed Effects Models and Extensions in Ecology with R, by Alain F. Zuur ... [et al.], and Analysis of phylogenetics and evolution with R, by Emmanuel Paradis.

The R books appear appear as pins on the New e-books July 2013 and New e-books August 2013 boards.

How to use e-books on mobile devices

Many of the e-books that the University has purchased can be downloaded Android and Apple (iOS) devices including tablets, smartphones, iPads and iPhones, as well as e-readers such as Sony ereader, Kindle and Nook.

Different e-book platforms support different devices. The following information has been adapted from the ebooks@cambridge website http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/ebooks/index.html and blog http://ebookscambridge.wordpress.com/2013/08/16/dawsonera-downloading-arrives/.

Dawsonera

dawsonera ebooks can now be downloaded to Android and Apple (iOS) mobile devices, including tablets, smartphones, iPads and iPhones. Users will be asked to choose from 1 or 2 day downloads. Downloading to Mac computers has also been enabled.

Each dawsonera e-book is available as either PDF or as EPUB file, this depends on the publishers. Instructions for downloading these two file types are different and detailed in the online help guides available from this User Guide webpage.

Click on either Downloading ebooks to an Android device or on Downloading ebooks to iOS for step-by-step instructions. You will need to have registered for an Adobe ID if you haven’t got one already, you can do this from here. You will also need to ensure you have the Bluefire Reader App downloaded onto your device (for reading EPUB files) and the Adobe Reader App (for downloading PDF files).

You can still download dawsonera ebooks to a PC, laptop or memory stick and also to a Mac (although if the default PDF reader is Preview the ebooks won’t open, try installing and using Adobe Reader instead). 

Cambridge Books Online, Cambridge Companions Online, Oxford Scholarship Online, SpringerLink and Wiley

Chapters from these platforms can be downloaded in PDF format to e-readers including the Kindle.

MyiLibrary

Some ebooks from this platform can be downloaded for 3 days to PC, laptop, Sony ereader, Nook, iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Android devices, but not Kindle. NEW: Balfour Library Pinterest online pinboard to publicise books and e-books acquisitions

I have created a Pinterest online pinboard for the Balfour Library at: http://pinterest.com/zoolib/. It comprises several separate ‘boards’ with book cover images ‘pinned’ on. It includes an ‘E-books in zoology and neuroscience’ board, and monthly boards for new zoology and neuroscience printed books and e-books recently purchased, and even one for Zoology staff publications held in the Balfour and other libraries in the University.

I aim to add to these boards over time. You can also get to the Pinterest pinboard from the Balfour Library website here: http://www.zoo.cam.ac.uk/.

Simply click on the book covers to see the bibliographic details of the book/e-book, and click on it again to go to the record for it on the online catalogue (from where you will be able to link directly to e-books).

I hope that the boards help you visualize all the books, and particularly the e-books, that are available to you, instead of having to read through a long list.

Your comments on and further suggestions for the pinboard content and design are most welcome.

Come along to the drop-in session and bring your devices if you have one, otherwise just bring yourself! All students and staff are welcome to drop by and ask us questions. Extra attractions include coffee, juice, biscuits and crisps.

Ebooks drop-in session at the UL 22nd January

An ebooks drop-in session will be held at the UL's North Reading Room from 11am-12pm next Tuesday 22nd January. It is aimed at students, academics and librarians with questions about finding, accessing and downloading ebooks.

Additional lunchtime drop-in sessions are being organised to be held at Psychology (7th February) and Law - details to follow in due course.
