Balfour Library end of term information

Saturday morning opening

If you have successfully applied for out of hours access to the library, the last Saturday morning that the Balfour Library will be open before the Easter Vacation starts is Saturday 6th March. Saturday morning opening will begin again on the first Saturday of the Easter Term 2010, i.e. Saturday 24th April.

Easter borrowing regulations

Lent Term 2010 ends on Friday 12th March. All books on loan from the Balfour Library must be returned by this date. Books may be renewed for further periods, but please remember that they cannot be taken away from Cambridge. This is because all of our books are subject to recall by other readers and we would need to be able to get them back easily if another reader requested them.

During the Easter Vacation the loan period for Overnight Loan books changes to two weeks, but books still cannot be taken away from Cambridge.

How to access online resources when you are away from Cambridge (and you are still a valid member of the University)

If you do not currently have an Raven password and think you may need one to access the Web of Knowledge or Scopus (to search scientific literature) or online journals and databases when you are away from Cambridge, you should apply for one following the instructions given on the University Computing Service 'How do I get a Raven password?' website at http://www.cam.ac.uk/cs/docs/faq/n5.html This page will also help you if you have lost or forgotten your Raven password.

It is strongly recommended that you check the University Library's ejournals@cambridge page at http://camsfx.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/cambridge/az to see whether you will actually be able to access particular online journals away from the University network (cam.ac.uk domain) BEFORE you leave Cambridge, or see http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/electronicresources/ for access to particular databases. See the 'Access Route' link next to the journal or database title to do this. Some online journals are not accessible outside of the University network so you may wish to download or print off articles from these before you leave Cambridge.

Easter period closing dates

The Balfour Library will close for Easter at 5:00pm on Thursday 1st April and will re-open at 8:30am on Tuesday 6th April. The library will be open as usual throughout the Easter Vacation however, see our opening hours at http://www.zoo.cam.ac.uk/library/open.html

The Cambridge Libraries Widget is an interface for Cambridge library users and draws together search facilities, your library profile, loans and requests in one easy-to-manage application.

You can access it in CamTools, Facebook and iGoogle, or embed it in your own web page, so you can use it wherever you spend time online. The page linked to above also provides instructions on how you can quickly and easily install the Widget to use these applications.

You can also access the Widget from the Balfour Library website. It has been embedded on "Books and ebooks" area (follow the links for 'Books and ebooks' > 'Borrowing books' > 'How to renew a book') and also in the Library Account & Renewals "Quick link" on the right-hand side of the library website home page at: http://www.zoo.cam.ac.uk/library/index.html

An easy new way to check your library account and renew your books - use the Cambridge Libraries Widget

The Cambridge Libraries Widget is available via a Quick Link called "Library Account & Renewals", located on the right-hand side menu of the Balfour Library homepage.

You can check what books you have on loan, and request their renewal. You can also do a quick search of the catalogue and make reservations.

Just log in with your library card bardcode number and your surname, and the rest should be straight forward - though do please ask library staff for help if not.

eduroam

Eduroam is an international initiative that allows members of educational establishments to gain internet access at other member sites easily, using credentials from their home site in a secure manner.

Authentication details (username/password) are configured into the user's computer and tested at the home site before departure. These details are used automatically at the destination site when the computer discovers the Eduroam network is available (usually via a wireless network SSID called 'eduroam'). The JANET Roaming Service (JRS) is part of eduroam.

Cambridge is a participating organisation in the JRS and has:

• home organisation status which allows Cambridge users who are visiting an insitution that is a member of JRS/eduroam to access the network using their Cambridge credentials;

• visited organisation status which allows visitors to Cambridge, from other member institutions, to access the network using the credentials provided by their home institution.

Digital researcher: Managing your networks and building your profile

The British Library and Vitae are running a one day event on 15 March 2010 exploring the use of Web 2.0 in research, networks and building researchers own profiles.

The interactive event, held at the British Library, is for postgraduate researchers and research staff. It will include presentations and interactive sessions on subjects such as microblogging, RSS feeds, social networking and social citation sharing. The day is being held to help develop the skills needed for research in an increasingly digital world and will give ideas for managing information.

Self-check facility in the Balfour Library is working again

I am very pleased to tell you that the self-issue facility is now up and running as usual again.

Thanks for your patience.

Self-issue facility in the library not working

Unfortunately the self-issue system in the Balfour Library is not available until further notice due to a hard disk problem.

This means that you will not be able to borrow books outside of normal library opening hours (i.e. 8:30-5:00 Monday to Thursday, 8:30-4:30 Fridays). Library staff can issue books to you on the system from the Library Office during opening hours, but obviously you will need to make sure that you are there before we leave so that you can borrow Overnight Loan or any other books that you need.

We're really sorry for the inconvenience; hopefully it will be sorted out soon, I'll let you all know when it is.
